Summer 2004 Senior Computer Course Schedule

Introduction to the Internet

This eight week course requires only basic computer skills. It introduces all the concepts required to use all the basic facilities of the Internet including e-mail, Usenet, and the World-Wide-Web. It covers not only the software used to access the Internet, but also the common conventions and "netiquette" to help the new user avoid social difficulties online, and the basics of avoiding problems with things like viri and other malware. Legal copies of all the required software is provided so the student will easily be able to bring their new-found knowledge home.

This course will be held on Tuesdays, from 1:00 to 2:00. It will start on June 1 and cost $9 for Saugus seniors ($10 for non-Saugus seniors, $18 for non-senior Saugus residents, and $20 for all others) per class.

Introduction to Interactive Fiction

This ten week course requires only basic computer skills. It is a fun introduction to the fascinating world of interactive fiction. The first five weeks shows the student how to get and use existing interactive fiction, and discusses some popular titles. The final weeks discuss the basics of writing one's own interactive fiction. Legal copies of all the required software is provided so the student will easily be able to bring their new-found knowledge home.

Depending upon the interest in this course, a ten week follow-up course will be offered that will help students get even more writing skills.

This course will be held on Thursdays, from 1:00 to 2:00. It will start on June 10 and cost $9 for Saugus seniors ($10 for non-Saugus seniors, $18 for non-senior Saugus residents, and $20 for all others) per class.

A Guide to Free Software

This two week course is for graduates of the Introduction to the Internet course. It introduces the wonderful world of free software. Different platforms and windowing systems are discussed in addition to free applications.

Depending upon the interest in this course, a six week follow-up course will be offered that will show students how to make good use of some of the most popular free software titles.

This course will be held on Tuesdays, from 1:00 to 2:00. It will start on August 10 (scheduling may change) and cost $9 for Saugus seniors ($10 for non-Saugus seniors, $18 for non-senior Saugus residents, and $20 for all others) per class.
